Chapelle-Chambertin belongs to the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits, the heart of Bourgogne in eastern France. It is a place-bound Grand Cru appellation, and every bottle in this collection comes from precisely this delimited vineyard. The vineyard was recognised as a Grand Cru in 1937 and is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's nine Grand Cru vineyards. At around 5.5 hectares it is among the smaller of them, and it lies close to Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. The name derives from a former chapel on the site, and the vineyard comprises two parts, la Chapelle and Les Gémeaux.
Here only red wine is made, from Pinot Noir. Compared with Gevrey's other Grand Cru, the wines from Chapelle-Chambertin are among the lighter in colour, and that is part of their charm. When you are looking for a Bourgogne with both elegance and finesse, this is where you can immerse yourself.
One of the most appealing features of Chapelle-Chambertin is its ageing potential. The wines can develop beautifully over 15 to 30 years. In their young years the expression is often fresh and fruit-driven, while the years in the cellar bring more complex and mature nuances. If you want to enjoy a bottle while it is still young, it can be worth giving it a little time in the decanter, so the aromas have room to unfold.
It is a wine that suits gently prepared dishes with red meat, poultry, mushrooms and mature cheeses, where its structure and finesse have something to play off. If you are curious about what Pinot Noir can do in this part of the world, Chapelle-Chambertin is a fine place to begin. Take your time to taste your way through, and let the wine's provenance and age guide the experience.
