Fiano with Height, Precision, and Depth from Montefredane in Campania
Villa Diamante is a small and uncompromising winery in Campania, founded in 1996 by Antoine Gaita and his wife Diamante. The vineyard is located on the hills around Montefredane in the province of Avellino - an area characterized by steep slopes, high altitude, and significant temperature differences between day and night.
Here, some of Southern Italy's most precise and age-worthy white wines are created.
Vineyards, Altitude, and Soil
Villa Diamante has about three hectares of vineyards, exclusively planted with fiano. The vineyards primarily face north and are situated at altitudes between 400 and 600 meters above sea level. The combination of warm days and cool nights ensures slow ripening and preserves the grapes' natural acidity and aromatic clarity.
The soil is deep and complex with a high content of clay, stones, and ancient volcanic lapilli from Vesuvius' historic eruptions. This provides ideal conditions for white grape varieties and contributes to the wines with structure, minerality, and depth.
The work in the vineyard is carried out organically and with minimal intervention. The goal is consistently to let Montefredane's high-altitude terroir express itself without technical shortcuts.
Work in the Cellar
In the cellar, the approach is also based on observation rather than intervention. The wines are spontaneously fermented without the addition of cultured yeast and are neither clarified nor filtered. After fermentation, the wines are aged for about 12 months in steel with long contact with the lees.
This practice has been a consistent part of Villa Diamante's philosophy since the beginning and made Antoine Gaita known as an innovative and uncompromising interpreter of fiano - long before 'long lees contact' became common practice for white wine in Southern Italy.
The Next Generation
Antoine Gaita tragically and unexpectedly passed away in early 2015. Today, the work is continued by his daughter Serena Gaita, who is a trained oenologist and has taken over responsibility for wine production.
She continues in the same spirit as her father - with a focus on precision, patience, and respect for both grape and place - and has admirably carried on Villa Diamante's unique style.
Fiano - The Grape and Expression
Fiano is one of Southern Italy's oldest grape varieties, with roots dating back to Roman times. Today, it is primarily grown in Campania and Sicily. The grape is relatively resistant to drought and diseases, which reduces the need for intervention in the vineyard, but the yield is naturally limited.
Fiano ripens late and has a high natural acidity, making it particularly suitable for vinification with minimal intervention. The result is wines with both body and vibrancy.
The wines from Villa Diamante often exhibit complex aromas of nuts, flowers, honey, minerality, and fresh herbs – combined with structure, length, and great aging potential.
