This is a juicy, energetic Sangiovese with lively acidity, moderate but firm tannins, and a core of red berries, cherry, and a salty, mineral finish. The acidity and tannins cut nicely through fat and umami, so the wine suits classic Tuscan meat dishes, charcuterie, and grilled meat without being overpowered. The wine's vibrant acidity also makes it refreshing with tomato-based pasta dishes, while the ripe tannins find calm against the richness of hard, aged cheese. Serve it at 16-18 degrees, so the tannins feel soft and round.

About the wine

Cielo d'Ulisse is favored by the "fresh climate" on the western side of Montalcino. Here, the vineyards are surrounded by forest and river, which helps them withstand heat better. This creates a dynamic wine with great drinkability and not too much sweetness. The balance is elegant, and the taste is full of finesse.

Harvested at the end of September.

Fermentation in large open vats for 40 days, the first 80% of the fermentation is done with open pump overs, while the remaining 20% of the fermentation is done in the Piedmontese style (infusion).

28 months of aging in oak barrels and 14 months in cement.

The color is deep dark red. The aroma is wonderfully large with small dark red berries and fruits, especially blackberries stand out.

The taste is full of finesse with high-quality tannins that support a well-balanced acidity. Delightfully dynamic, light without being sweet.

The structure and texture clearly indicate that the wine has great aging potential.

A wine that drinks really well.

Critic reviews

93Robert Parker
The Wine Advocate
shows a spicy character with clove and white pepper. Those notes are faint, but they do help to uphold dark layers of dried cherry and blackcurrant. There is a point of sour fruit on the close of this mid-weight Brunello.
92Antonio Galloni
Vinous
wafts up from the glass with a perfumed mix of violets and roses complementing dried blueberries and hints of smoke. It's silky and cool-toned in feel, with racy acidity guiding its tart wild berry fruit.
96Wine Enthusiast
The nose begins savory and earthy before sweet cherries and bitter espresso start to sparkle. The palate is full of black cherries and figs, with a bolder coffee flavor reappearing on the finish. The tannins are chalky and dense, while marvelously intense acidity persists through the finish.
