Aligoté is Bourgogne's second white grape, often in the shadow of Chardonnay, but with a character all its own. It is a thin-skinned, white Vitis vinifera variety that produces dry white wines with a fresh, crisp profile and moderate alcohol. It is precisely that freshness that makes it a grape many wine lovers are fond of when they want something lively and unpretentious in the glass.
With us, our Aligoté comes from France, and more specifically from Bourgogne, where the grape has its natural home. Here it is grown side by side with Chardonnay, and the two are sometimes used in blends. But Aligoté also stands well on its own, showing a dry, crisp style that clearly sets it apart from the fuller white wines of the same region.
Beyond Bourgogne, the grape is also grown in Bulgaria, but it is the Burgundian expression you will find in our selection. Aligoté also appears under synonyms such as Blanc de Troyes, Chaudenet Gras and Giboudot, names you might come across if you dig deeper into the grape's history.
With its pronounced acidity and dry style, Aligoté is well suited to the table. It pairs well with light dishes, shellfish and fresh vegetables, and works nicely as a welcome wine that whets the appetite. If you want to explore Bourgogne from a slightly less familiar angle than Chardonnay, Aligoté is an obvious place to start. It is a grape that rewards curiosity with honest freshness and a clear grounding in its French origin.
