Canaiolo Bianco is a white-skinned grape variety with its roots firmly planted in Toscana in central Italy. It is closely related to the dark Canaiolo Nero (probably a mutation of it), and that very connection tells you something about the grape's history. For generations Canaiolo Bianco was a minor but steady component in the Tuscan blends, where it traditionally found its way into Chianti and other local red wines as a secondary component. Toscana remains its home and the region where the grape is first and foremost cultivated.

Vinified on its own, Canaiolo Bianco shows another side. Here you get a dry white wine with moderate alcohol and an aromatic expression that leans towards citrus and herbal, grassy notes. It is a style that calls for freshness rather than weight, and which suits the grape's discreet but characterful nature.

In the vineyard Canaiolo Bianco is a variety that ripens from mid to late in the season and therefore needs warm, sunny conditions to reach full maturity. The vines have moderate to high vigour and bear medium-sized bunches with small, round berries with thin skins. The thin skin makes the grape susceptible to mildews (both downy and powdery mildew), while it copes reasonably well against grey rot.

It is worth knowing that Canaiolo Bianco has become an ever rarer guest. Since the end of the 20th century the acreage in Toscana has shrunk considerably, as international white varieties have taken over the space in the modern vineyards. That makes the grape a small piece of Tuscan wine history worth noting if you enjoy exploring the more site-bound and overlooked grape varieties. If you are curious about Italy's lesser-known corners, Canaiolo Bianco is a fine occasion to look beyond the usual white wine grapes and discover a variety that carries Toscana's traditions onward at a calmer pace.
