Garnacha Tintorera is a red grape variety with its base in northwestern Spain. You also come across it under the names Mouratón and Alicante Bouschet, and it is grown in Bierzo as well as in a number of Galician appellations. The grape is a permitted red variety in Rías Baixas, Monterrei and Ribeira Sacra, and it is also planted in Ribeiro and Valdeorras. In Ribeiro it even has a historical presence in the vineyards, and it was once used extensively for replanting after phylloxera.

What characterises Garnacha Tintorera is a powerful tannin structure. It produces wines with a marked backbone, and precisely for that reason many producers work deliberately to refine the tannins. This can happen through longer barrel ageing or through ageing in amphora, both of which soften the expression and give the wine more harmony over time.

In practice you see the grape used in several ways, and that says something about how versatile it is. It can stand alone as a pure varietal wine, but it also often features in cuvées in northwestern Spain, where it is typically blended with Mencía. In Cigales it contributes in smaller proportions to rosado blends, and in the area around Ribera del Duero it is even part of the production of sparkling wine.

For you who would like to explore Spanish red wine beyond the most familiar varieties, Garnacha Tintorera is an interesting acquaintance. It produces colourful, structured wines that often work well with hearty food, and it shows a different side of Galicia and northwestern Spain than many associate with the area. When the tannins have been given time in barrel or amphora, the wines appear more rounded and inviting, and they tell the story of a grape that has deep roots in the local wine tradition.
