Meursault is one of the truly central village appellations in Côte de Beaune, in the heart of Bourgogne, and for many the name is almost synonymous with white Bourgogne. Here almost exclusively Chardonnay is grown (around 98 percent), while a very small share is red wine. The appellation contains no Grand Cru vineyards, but in return it has a full 19 Premier Cru climats. Among the most admired you will find Les Perrières, Les Charmes and Les Genevrières.
The vineyards lie at around 280 to 380 metres of altitude on soils of clay and limestone, often with a good element of marl. It is precisely this interplay between grape and limestone soil that gives Meursault its character. The wines are considered a benchmark for white Bourgogne: full-bodied, rich Chardonnay with notes of butter and toasted nuts alongside citrus. You will encounter both the classic, more generous style and a leaner, more mineral version, depending on the vineyard and the hand.
At Copenhagen Wine all our Meursault comes from precisely this delimited appellation, where the origin is fixed by law and not a choice between regions. We carry a selection that lets you discover the differences between the individual climats and between the rich and the more mineral style. If you are curious about white Bourgogne, Meursault is an obvious place to begin: the wines are at once accessible and serious, and they clearly show what Chardonnay can do when it is allowed to ripen on limestone soil in one of the world's most highly regarded corners for white wine.
Feel free to serve a Meursault with light meat, poultry or dishes with cream and butter, where the wine's body and freshness have room to unfold. Take your time to let the wine open up in the glass, so the nutty tones and the fresh acidity emerge more clearly. If you want to explore further, you will find more French classics under Frankrig.
