Collection: Santenay

Santenay is a village appellation (village AOC) at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune in Bourgogne in France. The appellation was created in 1937 and covers the vineyards in the municipalities of Santenay and Remigny. It is one of the southernmost village appellations in the Côte de Beaune, and all the wines in this collection come precisely from here. The origin is established by law, not a random choice among several areas.

Here they mainly make red wine from Pinot Noir, supplemented by a smaller share of white wine from Chardonnay. The red wines are grown with an emphasis on finesse and elegance rather than pure power, and it is this quiet, classic Burgundian style that characterises the appellation. Balance and nuance take centre stage. Santenay also holds twelve premier cru vineyards, representing the best-situated parcels in the area.

The red wines from Santenay have a fine ageing potential and can develop over 10 to 20 years. During that period the tannins soften, and the wine gradually unfolds its aromas and nuances. This makes the appellation interesting both for you who enjoy the wine in its younger years, and for you who have the patience to set a bottle aside and follow its development.

At Copenhagen Wine we carry wines from Santenay, and if you want to explore the area further, you can delve into our broader selection from Bourgogne or take a closer look at the other appellations in France. Santenay is a good place to start if you appreciate the classic, elegant side of Burgundian wine.
