Biodynamic wine

Biodynamic wine is wine made from grapes grown according to biodynamic principles. It is a form of farming that builds on organic methods, meaning entirely without artificial pesticides and synthetic fertilisers, but it goes a step further. Here you view the whole vineyard as one living cycle, where soil, plants, animals and people are connected. The work in the field is often planned according to nature's own cycles, including the rhythms of the moon and the seasons, and natural preparations are used to strengthen the life of the soil and the health of the vines.

It matters to you as someone tasting the wine, because the philosophy is about biodiversity and about letting the soil and the terroir come clearly to expression in the glass. Many biodynamic producers also work gently in the cellar, for example with natural yeast from the grapes themselves and a sparing use of sulphur. The idea is that healthier grapes and living soil give wines with greater depth, balance and personality.

You can recognise a certified biodynamic wine by the marking on the label, and the certification sets concrete requirements for the cultivation. A common misunderstanding is that biodynamic and organic are the same thing. Everything biodynamic is organic, but the biodynamic approach also includes a holistic view of the farm as a self-sustaining, living system.
