Organic wine

Organic wine is wine made from grapes grown according to organic principles, that is, without the use of synthetic sprays and chemical additives in the vineyard. The thinking rests on respect for nature and for the place where the grapes grow. Spray residues from conventional farming have long-lasting effects on the soil, the surrounding environment and the food chain, and organic practice tries to avoid exactly this. Many producers think about sustainability broadly and, for example, draw part of the energy in their winemaking from solar panels and other renewable sources. The goal is healthy grapes that are rich in life and expression, and a good balance between people and nature.

For you as a drinker, this means the wine comes from a production where the method itself is given great weight. Many who drink organic wine point to colour, taste, aroma and texture as precisely what sets it apart, and they often buy other organic goods too. If you want to be sure that a wine is organic, look for an official certification on the label, because that is what documents the growing method, especially when producer and consumer are far apart.

A widespread misunderstanding is that organic automatically means entirely without additives or entirely without sulphur. The rules are first and foremost about the growing in the vineyard, and the cellar work can still vary from house to house.
