This fumin has dark fruit, spice and a lightly smoked character, but the tannins are soft and the juiciness high, so the wine has enough power for hearty food without becoming dry and tight. Serve it with braised and slow-cooked meat, where the richness meets the ripe tannins, and where the wine's notes of juniper, tobacco and licorice play up against spice and smoke. The fresh acidity also handles mature, nutty cheeses, while the smoked character finds an echo in grilled lamb with a crisp seared crust.

About the wine

Alpine Fumin with dark fruit, spice, and depth

Fumin is one of Valle d'Aosta's most characterful and indigenous grapes – intense, dark blue, with a hint of smoke, which also gives the grape its name. It is practically only grown here in the region and has historically been used in blends to add color and power.

In 1992, Les Crêtes was the first to vinify Fumin as a pure, standalone wine. The result is a deep and complex red wine with great aging potential and a distinct personality.

In the glass, the wine is deep red with violet nuances. The aroma offers dark spices, leather, and a light smoky touch. The taste is super juicy and fresh with soft tannins and a complex flavor profile with notes of vanilla, juniper, tobacco, and licorice. A wine with great persistence and strength – but always with balance and elegance.

Best served at 16–18 degrees in large glasses. The wine has power and complexity. The wine can be stored for up to 30 years.

The wine comes from La Tour d'Aymavilles, where the grape thrives at an altitude of 650 meters on slopes with granite-rich moraine soil. The alpine climate with cold winters and cool summers provides slow ripening and high aromatic concentration.

After destemming, the wine is fermented in steel at 24 °C over 12 days with daily pump-overs. It is then aged in small French oak barrels for 12 months and bottle-aged for an additional six months before release.

A powerful and authentic wine.

Very inky and flavorful with a tight, medium-bodied palate. Yet, it's clear and transparent. Fine, almost imperceptible tannins. Lots of black fruit and hints of tar.
