Vigna Schiena d'Asino is Mastrojanni's top wine. It is a single vineyard Brunello di Montalcino, which is aged for a full 42 months in Allier oak casks and then 12 months in bottles in Mastrojanni's cellar.

Schiena d'Asino has a characteristically dense but transparent red color and the nose appears with notes of wild berries accompanied by fresh herbs and dried tobacco. The taste starts strong and almost harsh, and ends with a generous and long aftertaste.

Can be enjoyed with strong dishes, but is excellent on its own. A wine that should be enjoyed with good friends.

Critic reviews

94+ Ian D'Agata
Vinous
Brightly saturated full red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, sweet spices, orange peel, and minerals are nuanced and deep. Silky on entry, then bracing, penetrating and complex in the mid-palate, with outstanding laser-like focus and energy to the red berry, mint, licorice, mineral, and candied violet flavors. Superb tension coupled with outstanding clarity and cut make this one of the better Brunellos released this year. Finishes long and fine-grained.

Wine Advocate
With only 5,000 bottles produced, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino might prove difficult to find and buy. If you do locate this wine however, I am very happy to recommend it despite its high price. All the senses are treated to a full-on Brunello experience that excels on all fronts, from intensity and balance to length of mouthfeel. Fruit for this wine comes from a single vineyard site located at the crest of a hill, or the so-called donkey's back ("schiena d'asino" in Italian). The vines were planted in 1975 and this vineyard designate wine is only made in the best years. The buoyant bouquet delivers dark fruit backed by tarry spice and savory cured tobacco. This wine offers sophistication, power and elegance.
