Brunello di Montalcino from vineyards in eastern Montalcino
Mastrojanni is located in eastern Montalcino, where the estates Loreto and San Pio form the framework for one of the area's most notable Brunello projects. When the Roman lawyer Gabriele Mastrojanni bought the two estates in 1975 and planted his first vineyards, he laid the foundation for a winery with a clear focus on sangiovese and the site's unique conditions.
At the time of acquisition, the land was largely untouched. The steep and inaccessible hills had never been cultivated and were more characterized by wild nature than agriculture. It quickly became clear that the area was challenging to work with, but at the same time had great potential for quality, albeit with naturally low yields.
Vineyards, grape selection, and planting density
The choice of grape variety was given from the beginning. In Montalcino, sangiovese grosso - locally called brunello - is the natural foundation, and Mastrojanni planted only this grape.
The vines were planted with a density of about 5,700 plants per hectare, a level that allows for rational work in the vineyard but also ensures competition between the plants and thus greater concentration in the grapes. The combination of soil, exposure, and low yield has proven crucial for the wine's structure and expression.
Style and development
From the first vintages, the wines showed a clear distinctiveness with aromatic finesse and a characteristic expression that quickly attracted international attention. Especially the wine's floral notes - including the classic elderflower - became a hallmark of Mastrojanni's Brunello.
Since then, the quality has been maintained and continuously refined, with a focus on balance, purity, and a clear expression of both grape and growing site.
New ownership and contemporary direction
Today, Mastrojanni is owned by Francesco Illy, who also owns Podere Le Ripi. Under his ownership, work in the vineyard and cellar has been further developed with a clear focus on sustainability and precision. The estate is now organically certified, and vineyard work is carried out with great respect for both nature and biodiversity.
The winemaker today is Giulia Härri, who is responsible for the daily vinification and continues the house's style with a contemporary, sober approach. The focus is on transparency, freshness, and structure - Brunello with clarity rather than power.
Mastrojanni at Copenhagen Wine
Mastrojanni represents Brunello di Montalcino with a clear origin and consistent work in the vineyard. The combination of virgin vineyards, sangiovese grosso, organic cultivation, and a clear vinification style produces wines with both depth, energy, and aging potential.
It is Brunello that balances tradition and the present - and fits naturally into our selection of producers from Montalcino.
