Single vineyard Brunello with finesse, depth, and pronounced terroir character
Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto 2021 from Mastrojanni is one of the house's most refined and precise wines. This single vineyard wine originates from the Loreto estate and expresses Sangiovese with great clarity, elegance, and a clear sense of origin. The 2021 vintage gives the wine a cooler and more structured expression than many previous years, with a particular focus on balance and aging potential.
On the nose, the expression is complex and finely nuanced with dark cherries, wild berries, and dried rose petals, accompanied by spicy notes, fresh tobacco, and a discreet hint of forest floor. There is a precision and depth in the aromas that slowly unfold in the glass.
The taste is intense, yet elegant and focused. The tannins are firm and silky, the acidity is taut and lively, and the fruit is lightly carried by the wine's structure. The aftertaste is long, mineral, and persistent with a cool vibrancy that clearly distinguishes Vigna Loreto from the classic Brunello in the range.
It is a wine that already shows great class but will truly reveal its full potential after some years in the cellar.
The 2021 vintage was challenging but produced high-quality grapes. A very cold winter ensured the vines had a deep rest, while early budding was halted by night frosts in April, reducing yield and increasing concentration. The summer was marked by drought without extreme temperatures, resulting in slow, even ripening and grapes with beautiful phenolic components and clear depth.
Vigna Loreto is located at an altitude of 350 meters with southeast exposure. The soil is of lacustrine origin and consists of lignite-rich clay, sandstone, sand, and conglomerates. It is a terroir that gives the wine structure and complexity while managing to maintain freshness and elegance.
The harvest took place manually from September 30. After gentle pressing, the grapes are fermented in large wooden vats, followed by 23 days of maceration on the skins. The wine is then aged for 36 months in 25 hl barrels of Tronçais and Bercé oak, before receiving a minimum of six months of bottle aging.
Vigna Loreto was first produced in 2007 and is made only in very limited quantities.
It is a Brunello for the dedicated wine lover seeking a single vineyard wine with depth, elegance, and a long, beautiful life ahead – deserving of large glasses and good time.
