Syrah is a dark, full-bodied red wine grape originating in France, where it once arose as a natural cross between Mondeuse Blanche and Dureza. You will often come across it under the synonym Shiraz, and it also appears under names such as Serine and Sirah. Whatever the name, you can recognise it by its deep colour, its firm tannin structure and the spicy character that makes the grape so distinctive.
At Copenhagen Wine, Syrah has its centre of gravity in Italy, more specifically in Toscana, from where the majority of our bottles come. It may not be the region you first associate with the grape, but here Syrah takes on a sunny, warm expression that suits its full-bodied nature. From France we carry a wine from Rhône, the grape's historical home, where it has set the standard for how Syrah can taste. And all the way over on New Zealand's Waiheke Island you will find a cooler, more maritime interpretation that shows the grape's ability to change character according to terroir.
Place means a great deal for Syrah. The grape depends on its location, and where the right conditions are present, it produces deep, spicy and long-lived wines. This is one of the reasons the same grape can be experienced so differently from one bottle to another.
In the glass you will typically meet a full-bodied, tannin-rich red wine with warm, spicy tones. It works well with dishes of character, from grilled and braised meat to spicy stews, and several of the styles have the structure to develop nicely with a few years in the cellar. If you really want to understand the grape, you can compare our three origins side by side: Toscana, Rhône and Waiheke Island each offer their own take on what Syrah can be.
