Moscato is one of the world's most beloved aromatic grape varieties, and in Italy it is known primarily as Moscato Bianco. It is a white grape with a distinctly perfumed character, and the wines typically offer a sweet, fruity style with notes of honey, pear, apricot and flowers. At Copenhagen Wine our Moscato comes exclusively from Italy, where the grape has its natural home.
The centre of gravity lies in Piemonte, home to some of the most well-known Moscato wines in frizzante and sparkling style. Here the grape goes into several DOCG-classified wines, and it is this light, beaded type that many associate with the name. We also carry a Moscato from Toscana, so you can experience how the grape takes on the colour of different Italian regions.
One of the most characteristic things about Moscato, particularly in the frizzante style like Moscato d'Asti, is the low alcohol content, often around 5 to 7 percent. That makes the wines light and approachable, and they are popular as an aperitif, as a dessert wine and with sweet desserts. The wines are predominantly white with a straw-yellow colour, since they are made from Moscato Bianco. Rosé variants exist, but they are the exception rather than the rule.
In terms of taste, Moscato wines are characterised by low tannin content, while the acidity is typically moderate and fresh enough to keep the sweet fruit in balance. This gives an expression that feels light and inviting without becoming flat.
Moscato Bianco is moreover an early-ripening grape, and for that very reason it thrives in many different climates, including in cooler areas. This has helped make the grape widespread far beyond Italy. With us, however, you will find it in its Italian form, where Piemonte sets the tone and Toscana provides a welcome supplement. If you want to taste your way into the aromatic, light end of the wine world, Moscato is an obvious place to begin.
