Collection: Cupano
The story of the Cupano winery is primarily the story of Ornella and Lionel, who in the 90s bought and moved to the Centine farm. The farm is beautifully located in the hills southwest of Montalcino, close to the small village of Camigliano and overlooking the Ombrone River
Here they found completely virgin soil that had not been cultivated for over 40 years, and completely untouched by pesticides, fertilizers and sprays.
In addition to the beautiful surroundings and the unique wine cellar, you notice the beautiful, slender and almost iconic Cypress trees that flank the long driveway up to Ornalla's beautiful Tuscan villa. It is also these Cypress trees that have been an artist's inspiration for Cupano's easily recognizable label, with a red, stylized Cypress.
The farm's subsoil is a rare mixture of clay-mixed sand with sandstone/granite stone. A prehistoric volcanic eruption moved the course of the Ombrone River from the soil of Cupano to the current course of the river, leaving sediment where the vines now benefit from the geology of the subsoil.
Since Lionel planted the first vines in 1997, they have stubbornly stuck to organic management of the farm, and have since upgraded to bio-dynamic cultivation methods.
The farm has a total of 35 hectares, of which 6.4 hectares are planted with vines. Primarily Sangiovese for Cupano's Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, supplemented with Cabernet Saugvignon, Merlot and most recently Cabernet Franc for Cupano's Bourdeaux blend. Lionel's French background does not deny itself!
Lionel, who was known as a true wine gentleman in the wine world, unfortunately died in 2021, and his wife Ornella today runs the estate together with the skilled winemaker Andrea Polidoro, who has been with the family since 2014. He continues Cupano's proud craftsmanship -traditions with hand-harvesting and sorting of the grape bunches, gentle removal of the stems, fermentation with the grapes' natural yeast and generally gentle treatment with few pump-overs. After fermentation, the wines are stored in French barrels, with a maximum of 10% new wood.
Since the farm's first released vintage in 2001, Cupano has won the hearts of many wine lovers around the world, and we are very proud that we can now also present the wines from this unique and recognized top producer!
