Etna Bianco Superiore from Milo – focus on altitude, freshness, and minerality

Maugeri is located on the eastern side of Etna in the municipality of Milo - the only area entitled to the designation Etna Bianco Superiore. Here, at about 700 meters altitude, the Maugeri family works with a clear focus on white wines and rosé, shaped by Etna's volcanic soil and the unique microclimate.

The estate has about 7 hectares of vineyards spread over more than 100 terraces in the contradas Praino and Volpare. The vineyards are framed by a 2.8-kilometer-long lava stone wall, which both testifies to the area's history and creates a clear boundary of the growing site.

Family and reestablishment

The winery is now run by Renato Maugeri together with his daughters Carla, Paola, and Michela. The family has deep roots in Milo and returned to the area in 2015 to reestablish the family's wine production.

The work with the vineyards is carried out with great care and without compromises. Hundreds of chestnut poles stand in neatly arranged rows on the steep terraces, and the reconstruction of the vineyards appears as a rarely accomplished project in the context of Etna.

Terroir and microclimate

The vineyards overlook both Etna, forest, and the Ionian Sea. The cooling sea breeze plays a crucial role and helps keep the grapes healthy and fresh throughout ripening. Together with the volcanic soil, it creates a distinctive expression with high acidity, marked minerality, and clarity.

Contrada Volpare and Contrada Praino are considered among the most suitable areas in Milo for producing elegant, precise white wines.

Collaboration and vinification

The Maugeri family collaborates with the renowned oenologist Emiliano Falsini, and together they have defined a style where environmental and social sustainability go hand in hand with technical precision.

The production is organic, and all harvesting is done manually, typically in October. All grapes undergo a cryomaceration, where they are exposed to low temperatures to extract aroma and structure without extracting unwanted bitter substances.

After pressing, the must is clarified at low temperature, after which fermentation takes place in steel and oak. The distribution and aging vary depending on the cuvée, and today five different wines are produced in total.

Style and production

Maugeri has deliberately chosen to focus solely on white wines and rosé. As the family themselves put it:
“To do something exponentially well, it requires full focus.”

The total production is about 20,000 bottles annually, and the first vintage was 2020. The wines are characterized by elegance, pronounced minerality, and an intense yet balanced taste, where freshness and fullness go hand in hand.

Recognition

Maugeri has quickly gained international attention. Monica Larner from Wine Advocate writes, among other things:

“Maugeri is a very exciting new addition to the Etna wine scene, with an extremely relatable wine philosophy that zeros in on white and rosé wines.
The concept is brilliant, and the wines are excellent. If you are not familiar with Maugeri, I enthusiastically recommend that you seek these bottles out.”

Maugeri at Copenhagen Wine

For us, Maugeri is one of the most convincing examples of modern Etna Bianco. Wines with clarity, energy, and a clear imprint of altitude and volcanic origin.

These are white wines with both nerve and depth – Etna at its most precise.
