Collection: Port

Port is a fortified wine from the Douro valley in northern Portugal, and this is precisely where the majority of our selection comes from. What is special about Port is that fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirit (aguardente). In this way, some of the grapes' natural sugar is preserved, and the wine typically ends up at around 19-22% alcohol. This gives it the round, sweet style that Port is known for.

The grapes are native Portuguese varieties, where Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz are among the most important. They are grown on the steep slopes along the Douro river, and only wine from the demarcated Douro region may carry the name Port.

Behind the shared name lie several styles. Ruby Port is aged briefly in large vats and is young, fruity and dark in colour. Tawny Port is aged longer in smaller oak casks and develops its characteristic amber colour with notes of dried fruit, caramel and nuts. Vintage Port comes from a single outstanding vintage, is aged briefly in cask and then for a long time in bottle, while Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) likewise comes from a single vintage, but gets longer in cask than Vintage Port. In this way there is Port both for those seeking youthful fruit and for those who prefer the more mature, nutty style.

Port is most often enjoyed with dessert or with cheese, where the sweetness and the full body have something to play off against. A Tawny goes nicely with nut- and caramel-based desserts or a mature, powerful cheese, while a Ruby or Vintage stands up well to dark chocolate and blue cheeses.

With us you will find Port with proper provenance, marked by the steep slate slopes of the Douro. If you want to explore Portuguese wine more broadly, you can dive into our selection from Portugal, where you will find both fortified and dry wines from one of Europe's most distinctive wine countries.
