Collection: Portugal

Portugal is one of the most exciting wine countries you can throw yourself into right now. With a wine history stretching back several thousand years and a treasure trove of local grape varieties found almost nowhere else, the country offers a character all its own. This is not about imitating what is made elsewhere, but about cultivating the rooted and the authentic, and that is exactly the kind of wine we love.

The majority of our Portuguese selection comes from Douro, the valley along the Douro river in the country's north-eastern corner. It is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine districts, known for its steep, terraced vineyards along the river's slopes. Here they grow not only the famous port wines, but increasingly also quiet, concentrated red wines that show the area's depth and minerality from the schist- and granite-influenced soils.

It is often in Douro that you encounter some of Portugal's signature grapes. Touriga Nacional is regarded as the country's finest blue grape and gives wines with structure, dark fruit and an aromatic finesse. It often appears alongside Touriga Franca, which contributes aroma, elegance and a softer frame. Together they form the backbone of many of the blends that have made the region known, and they tell well the story of why Portuguese wines rarely resemble others.

If you are new to the Portuguese world, it can be a fine idea to begin in Douro and let the landscape's character lead you onward. If you explore the grapes individually, you will at the same time get a sense of the building blocks that recur across the region. We carry a selection that lets you discover Portugal at your own pace, from the more approachable red wines to the more concentrated bottles that want a little time in the glass. Wherever you start, you get wines rooted in a particular place, and for us that is the most important thing of all.
