Wines from Monte Amiata – volcanic influence and cool expression
Bakkanali is located on the slopes of the extinct volcano Monte Amiata in southern Tuscany, overlooking Montalcino. Geographically, we are in the Grosseto province, just outside the Montalcino zone, but with significantly different geological and climatic conditions.
The subsoil is clearly layered and dominated by marl - a calcareous clay soil enriched with limestone and volcanic minerals. The combination of lime and volcanic material gives the wines a distinct character, known from other volcanic areas, but here interpreted in a Tuscan context.
Soil, roots, and ripening
Marl soil can be dense and compact, but the vines' strong root systems effectively penetrate the soil layers and seek deep for nutrients and water. This provides both stability in dry periods and access to more of the mineral-rich layers in the subsoil.
The deep roots contribute to wines with structure, minerality, and complexity, while the cooler location on Monte Amiata ensures slow ripening and preserved freshness.
The project behind Bakkanali
Bakkanali was created by Sebastian Nasello in collaboration with his close friend Ugo Fabbri. Over the past ten years, Sebastian has explored the area around Monte Amiata with a clear goal: to find the right place to create wines according to his own principles – focusing on balance, precision, and respect for nature.
Sebastian Nasello is known as the winemaker behind Podere Le Ripi in Montalcino and recipient of the Giulio Gambelli award for young winemakers. His work is characterized by great attention to climate change and its impact on the wine's expression, combined with a constant curiosity to develop wine production without compromising nature.
Together, Sebastian and Ugo found on Monte Amiata the right combination of altitude, exposure, and soil - the foundation for Bakkanali.
Grapes and style
Bakkanali primarily works with sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon, supplemented by smaller amounts of merlot. Additionally, 1.5 hectares of chardonnay have recently been planted, which will expand the project's expression in the future.
The wines provide a clear picture of their origin. One can distinctly sense Italy and Tuscany, but also the international experience and inspiration that Sebastian and Ugo bring from travels and work in other wine regions. The result is wines where structure, freshness, and minerality take precedence over power and extraction.
Cultivation and philosophy
The production at Bakkanali is certified organic, and a biodynamic conversion is underway. The work in the vineyard is characterized by respect for nature and a desire to create wines that reflect both the growing site and vintage as precisely as possible.
Bakkanali at Copenhagen Wine
For us, Bakkanali is one of the most exciting projects in southern Tuscany. Wines with a distinct volcanic character, coolness, and structure - created by a winemaker with deep insight and a clear vision.
These are wines that show how new areas can complement the classics - not by imitating them, but by standing clearly on their own.
