Collection: Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the world's most widely planted white grapes, and it originally hails from Bourgogne in France. Indeed, it is Bourgogne that makes up the bulk of our Chardonnay selection, and here the grape truly shows its ability to reflect soil and terroir. The grape is non-aromatic by nature, meaning that it carries no pronounced aroma of its own, but instead lets the vineyard and the cellar work express themselves in the glass. The result is typically dry to medium-bodied white wines that range from the fresh and mineral to the more full-bodied and creamy, often depending on whether the wine has been aged in oak barrels.

France takes up the most space with us, and besides Bourgogne we also carry Chardonnay from Champagne, where the grape is one of the three central grapes in the production of mousserende vin. As blanc de blancs, Chardonnay stands alone here and gives an elegant, fine-limbed style, while in the classic blends it contributes freshness and finesse.

Italy is our second-largest source of Chardonnay. Here you will find, among others, wines from Lombardiet and Valle d'Aosta, along with smaller selections from Piemonte, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Toscana and Sicilien. The Italian expression varies from the cooler, alpine regions in the north to the warmer south, and this gives a fine breadth of styles. Finally, we carry a few German Chardonnay, which add yet another Northern European perspective to the collection.

Chardonnay is a rewarding grape to bring to the table. The fresher versions suit fish and shellfish, while the more full-bodied, barrel-aged wines work well with poultry, pasta and aged cheeses. Whether you are looking for a crisp, mineral white wine or a round and creamy style, you can find a Chardonnay that suits both the occasion and the dish. It is precisely this versatility that makes the grape a good starting point if you want to explore how origin and cellar work shape a white wine.
