Terroir-driven wines from Colli Orientali in Friuli
Ronc Platât is located just below the historic monastery in Rosazzo, in the municipality of Manzano near Udine, in the heart of Friuli Colli Orientali. Friuli is situated in the northeastern corner of Italy, close to the Slovenian border, and is known for its terroir-driven wines - particularly white wines with precision, depth, and clarity.
The area has been among Italy's most respected for decades, especially for grapes like friulano, sauvignon blanc, and pinot grigio, which here have a more structured and mineral expression than in many other parts of the country.
Tommaso Zanuttini - a young winery with clear ambitions
Ronc Platât was founded in 2020 by Tommaso Zanuttini. After a career as a lawyer in Milan, he chose to change course and studied oenology at the University of Udine to pursue his passion for wine.
With inspiration and advice from established producers like Ronco del Gnemiz and Due del Monte, Tommaso has quickly created a winery with a distinct style and great respect for both vineyard and region. Most of the wines come from old vineyards that the team cultivates themselves, supplemented with grapes from carefully selected parcels. The vineyards are primarily within the DOC Friuli Colli Orientali and are being converted to organic farming with certification from 2024.
Vineyard work focused on balance and low yields
The vines are trained using the guyot system, and yields are consistently kept low - typically 2–4 tons per hectare. In the vineyard, only copper sulfate (Bordeaux mixture), sulfur, and natural remedies are used, and all harvesting is done manually.
The production is still small but growing. In 2022, about 16,000 bottles were produced, while 2023 saw around 27,000 bottles, partly due to a collaboration with two parcels in Slovenia. The long-term goal is an annual production of about 35,000 bottles, without compromising on quality.
The wines - elegance, maturity, and clear origin
The wines from Ronc Platât have already found their way to some of the best restaurants in Italy and are exported to the USA, the UK - and now also Denmark.
The style is characterized by balance, ripe fruit, and a clear sense of place. Especially the white wines from the 2022 vintage show great elegance and precision. The year offered a warm and dry growing season without disease pressure, followed by rain at just the right time, resulting in wines with freshness, structure, and harmony.
GAF - Garagisti Anonimi Friulani
In addition to Ronc Platât, Tommaso is also behind the project GAF - Garagisti Anonimi Friulani. The project was started in 2019 with four friends as an experimental and collective wine project focusing on lesser-known vineyards and alternative blends from Friuli.
Although GAF began as an anonymous garage project, the wines have quickly gained attention for their energy, authenticity, and clear regional anchoring. The wines combine Friuli's traditions with a modern and lively expression – and serve as a creative supplement to the Ronc Platât universe.
