Etna Rosso DOC comes from the eastern slopes of Etna in Sicily, an active volcano that leaves its mark on both the landscape and the wines. Up here at altitude, a cool and humid, almost continental climate prevails, standing in sharp contrast to the rest of Sicily. It is the volcanic soil combined with the high elevations, where chestnuts and pine trees thrive, that creates the very particular growing conditions. Together this gives a sense of place that has made Etna one of the most exciting areas in the Sicilian wine world.
The red wines are based on Nerello and come across as full-bodied and fruit-driven with clear traces of their origin. The same grape underlies the area's rosato, which is made from Nerello and brings out a lighter, fresher side of Etna. Although it is the red wines we truly associate with Etna Rosso, the shared grape base helps you understand what the volcano can give in the glass.
The area also offers white wines, typically based on Catarratto combined with Carricante, a grape variety that is entirely unique to Sicily. The white wines may include a touch of Trebbiano and come across as aromatic, crisp and relatively light in body. They are more aromatic and crisp than the white wines from Alcamo, which underlines how much the volcanic terroir matters.
At Copenhagen Wine we carry wines from Etna Rosso DOC, one of the most characterful expressions of Sicilian wines. If you would like to discover Italian wine with a volcanic identity and a cooler style than the one many associate with southern Italy, Etna Rosso is an obvious place to start.
