Castello Tricerchi

Elegant Brunello from the northern side of Montalcino

Castello Tricerchi is located on the northern side of Montalcino and is one of the area's most historically rooted estates. The property spans approximately 400 hectares, of which 13 hectares are planted with vineyards for Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.

At the center of the estate stands the castle, built in the 13th century by the Altesi family. In 1441, the castle was transferred to the Tricerchi family, and today the estate is both a winery and home to their direct descendants, the Squarcia family, who continue to run the place.

The castle and the cellar

The wine cellar is located where the Tricerchi family already in the 15th century deemed wine could best be produced - in the former dungeon beneath the castle. Here, the temperature is almost constant year-round, thanks to the extremely thick walls and the tunnels that run both above and below the cellar.

Part of the structure remains as it did about 600 years ago. Among other things, the old granary, which survived the latest restoration, can still be seen. The traditional framework is preserved, even though modern technology is naturally part of the production today.

The family and the work today

The wines are produced today by Tommaso Squarcia, who represents the 17th generation at the castle. His approach is characterized by great respect for the site's history and an uncompromising attitude towards quality.

It is precisely the combination of continuity, expertise, and a clear focus on Brunello di Montalcino that makes Castello Tricerchi a producer we at Copenhagen Wine have chosen to invest in long-term.

Vineyards and plots

Behind the castle, the vineyards spread up the mountainside and down towards a lake, which in ancient times was used for both household and irrigation purposes. The vineyards are divided into seven individual plots, all cultivated according to the same principles but vinified with respect for their individual expression.

The individual plots bear the names "The Veil," "The Castle," "Sant’Anna," "The Lake," "The Cypresses," and "The New Vineyard."

The best grapes for Brunello di Montalcino are handpicked from the most suitable plots, particularly "The Castle" and "Sant’Anna," which are considered among the estate's finest vineyards.

Style and philosophy

The wines from Castello Tricerchi are classic in expression and clearly rooted in their origin. The focus is on balance, elegance, structure, and aging potential rather than immediate accessibility. These are wines that develop over time and reward patience.

The estate has been organically certified since 2022, which underscores the work with the vineyards and respect for both soil and environment.

Castello Tricerchi at Copenhagen Wine

Castello Tricerchi represents the type of Brunello di Montalcino we value most: consistently produced, clearly rooted in its place, and with a clear expression of both vintage and origin.

These are wines that speak to those seeking classic Brunello with depth, elegance, structure, and authenticity, and a producer with a history that cannot be copied.
