Riesling is one of the world's most highly regarded white grapes. It originates in Germany, and this is precisely where the centre of gravity in our selection lies. With us, the vast majority of the wines come from German vineyards, among others from Ihringen in Baden and from the classic Rheingau, where the grape enjoys some of its finest conditions. Alongside Germany, Alsace, Østrig and Australien are considered the grape's other main areas, and it is also grown in a number of other cooler regions.
What characterises Riesling first and foremost is its high acidity and its complex, aromatic scents. The grape is not sweet in itself, but offers an expressive fruit character that plays beautifully with the acidity. The style spans broadly, from completely dry wines to sweeter versions, and it is this versatility that makes Riesling so exciting to explore.
Riesling has small berries, and depending on the clone it ripens from early to late in the season. One of the grape's most fascinating traits is its ability to develop in the bottle. The wine's terpenes change over time, and a Riesling with a few years behind it can therefore unfold an entirely new aromatic complexity. That makes it a rewarding grape to set aside, if you have the patience.
The fresh acidity and the aromatic notes make Riesling a flexible companion at the table. Dry versions suit fish, shellfish and light meat, while the sweeter styles thrive alongside spicy food and desserts. If you want to stay close to the grape's heartland, start with the German wines from Ihringen and Rheingau and feel how climate and terroir shape the expression. Whether you prefer the bone-dry or the slightly softer style, you will find a Riesling that suits the occasion.
