Collection: Chianti Classico DOCG

Chianti Classico DOCG is the heart of the Tuscan wine country, an original core area in the hills between Firenze and Siena, covering around 7,000 hectares. This is where you find the wines bearing the black rooster, gallo nero, which the producers' association (consorzio) uses as its symbol. At Copenhagen Wine we carry wines from precisely this defined appellation in Toscana, and this is where the grape shows its finest side.

The area has undergone a marked transformation from the 1980s onwards. Where the region was once known for mass-produced, light wines, the focus today has shifted to serious red wines suited to ageing. Modern cellar work includes temperature-controlled fermentation in steel tanks, ageing in smaller, new oak barrels rather than the large botti of chestnut wood, as well as extended skin contact during fermentation to draw colour and tannin from the skins.

Chianti Classico is built on Sangiovese, and the style can vary from producer to producer. The wines have structure and freshness that make them natural companions at the table, whether it is pasta or meat dishes in cosy company. In the higher-lying parts of the area with calcareous soils, interesting results have also been seen with the cultivation of chardonnay, which testifies to the versatility the region has gradually come to possess.

If you want to explore more from the same region, you can dive into our selection from Toscana and the rest of Italien, or get closer to the grape itself via our Sangiovese. Chianti Classico is among the most well-known and acclaimed origins, and it is easy to understand why once you have had the glass to your nose.
