This Chianti Classico is a fresh and fruit-driven Sangiovese with juicy red cherries, delicate spices, and a lively acidity carried by moderate, well-developed tannins. The acidity cuts beautifully through richness and brings tomato- and herb-based dishes to life, while the soft tannins settle down with a little fatty meat without turning astringent. You get the best balance when the food has the same medium-bodied weight as the wine, so that neither wine nor dish takes over. Feel free to choose dishes from the Tuscan kitchen, where tomato, olives, and herbs meet the wine's juicy fruit quite naturally.

About the wine

An explosion of sweet red cherries, rose petals, spices, and orange peel gives this vintage great immediacy.

2022 appears as a wine that is suitable for enjoying young.

100% Sangiovese from vineyards located at an average altitude of 500 meters above sea level.

The terroir is rich in stones. The soil consists of alternating layers of marl and limestone - Alberese and Galestro.

The wine is fermented for 20 days in concrete and stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature (max. 28°C).

Then maceration with skins for 8 weeks also in concrete and stainless steel tanks.

Aged for 12 months partly in 10hl, 20hl, and 40hl Slavonian oak barrels and partly in concrete tanks.

Critic reviews

92Decanter
Always a blend of estate vineyards in Radda and Gaiole, the 2022 incorporates Sangiovese from new acquisitions in Vagliagli and Lamole. It also sees the addition of 1% Malvasia Nera – Angela Fronti says she wanted to preserve the tradition of including a dash of other local varieties.

The 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Mezzapiaggia is packed with dark fruit, leather, incense, liquorice, chocolate, menthol and dried herbs. The Mezzapiaggia has come together well since I tasted it last year. It offers quite a bit of depth, with potent tannins to match.

A ripe, fruity style, slightly cooked, showing aromas of cherry jam and plums offset by balsamic. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and thick, offering muscular tannins, crisp acidity and an austere, fairly balanced finish.
94Wine Enthusiast
The 2022 Le Vigne Riserva is a fragrant, generous wine that boasts alluring aromas of ripe red cherry, violet, perfumed face powder and cake spice that mingle with Mediterranean brush and a whiff of sun-warmed beach sand.
95Wine Spectator
A fresh, fluid red, this exudes dark fruit flavors of blackberry, black cherry, graphite, tar and eucalyptus. A dusty undercurrent of tannins lends support, and the long aftertaste is driven by mouthwatering acidity. Shows lovely harmony.
