Monte Amiata – natural wine from old vines on an extinct volcano
Le Vignette is a young, passionate family winery located on the slopes of Monte Amiata in southern Tuscany, near Seggiano. The winery was founded in 2019 by Luca and Giuditta, who from the beginning have worked with natural wine on a very small scale - focusing on craftsmanship, old vines, and minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar.
The project started with the lease of a small vineyard, driven by curiosity and the desire to work close to nature and the landscape around Monte Amiata. Already at the end of 2020, the couple took the next step when they bought their own small cellar and began developing Le Vignette as an independent winery.
Vineyards, old vines, and grape varieties
Today, Le Vignette consists of six small parcels, covering just 1.2 hectares. The vines are between 40 and 90 years old and contain a rare mix of both local white and red varieties.
The white grapes include trebbiano, malvasia toscana, riminese, and ansonica, while the reds are primarily dominated by sangiovese and sangiovese grosso. There are also smaller amounts of rare varieties like ciliegiolo, uva del cavaliere, and colorino, which add extra nuance and complexity.
The high location at Monte Amiata provides cool nights and slow ripening, preserving freshness, acidity, and vibrancy – even in warm vintages.
Work in the vineyard and cellar
The work at Le Vignette is consistently craftsmanship-based. No tractors are used in the vineyards - all work is done manually from pruning to harvest. Only minimal amounts of copper and sulfur are used, and all wines are spontaneously fermented without added yeast cultures.
In the cellar, a combination of steel tanks and large, used oak barrels is used. The philosophy is to accompany the wines rather than shape them, allowing the grapes' natural aromas, structure, and origin to stand clear and undisturbed.
Philosophy and development
In 2022, Le Vignette began the process towards organic certification, and later that year, the winery was admitted to Vinnatur - the international association of producers working with natural wine based on strict and transparent principles.
The wines from Le Vignette are honest, lively, and marked by their origin. There are no cosmetic tricks here, but a clear expression of old vines, altitude, soil, and an uncompromising approach to low intervention.
