Collection: USA

The USA is one of the world's largest wine countries, and it is California that accounts for by far the largest share of production. The state alone is responsible for around 80% of American wine production, and it is also here that you find the core of our American selection. With us, Napa Valley takes up the most space, one of the most well-known wine areas in California, where particularly powerful red wine has made the region famous all over the world.

California holds a string of distinctive wine areas beyond Napa Valley, including Sonoma, Russian River Valley and Carneros. Among the most widespread grapes you find Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, so there is something to explore whether you prefer red or white.

Although California dominates, the USA is far more than one state. Washington is the second-largest wine state and is known for red grapes such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as for Riesling and Chardonnay, with Columbia Valley as one of the major areas. Oregon has made a particular name for itself with Pinot Noir in a Burgundian style, not least from Willamette Valley. This gives a good picture of the range in American wine, from the full-bodied and sun-ripened to the more coolly elegant.

When you see the designation AVA on an American label, it stands for American Viticultural Area, the USA's system for delimited wine areas. For an AVA name to be allowed on the bottle, at least 85% of the grapes must come from there, which makes the name a genuine indication of the wine's origin. It is a good guide if you want to understand where in the landscape your wine actually comes from. At Copenhagen Wine we place emphasis on exactly that kind of grounding in place and origin, and the majority of our American wines have their roots in California with Napa Valley at the front.
