Puligny-Montrachet is a village appellation in Côte de Beaune in Bourgogne, and it is counted among the world's great addresses for white wine. The appellation was established as an AOC in 1937 and covers the vineyards in the commune of Puligny-Montrachet, where white wine made from Chardonnay is produced almost exclusively. Here the grape and the place are inseparable, and it is precisely that connection that gives the wines their own, precise character.
In the glass you typically encounter notes of citrus, green apple and peach, often with a hint of white flowers. It is a style built on finesse and balance rather than muscle, and it is exactly that clarity that has made the appellation a constant reference point for what Chardonnay can do at its most refined.
Around half of the vineyard area is classified as premier cru, with names such as Les Pucelles, Les Perrières and Les Folatières. These are vineyards where soil and location lift the wines further in depth and expression. The commune also shares the Grand Cru vineyard Montrachet with the neighbouring village of Chassagne-Montrachet, but it is worth remembering that the appellation's Grand Cru vineyards constitute their own independent appellations and are thus not part of the village wine you find here.
At the table, Puligny-Montrachet is an obvious choice when you are looking for a white wine with both finesse and body. The balance suits poultry and fish beautifully and can also carry dishes with a creamy sauce. If you want to enjoy the wines young, it is worth giving them a little air and serving them not too cold, so the aromas have room to unfold.
