This Etna Rosso is elegant and light in style, close to great Pinot Noir or classic Barolo, with fresh, delicate tannins, a mineral backbone, and a fine smoked volcanic tone beneath the red fruits. That is why it pairs best with dishes of moderate body, where you meet the wine rather than overwhelm it, and where a little richness and umami soften the fine tannins. Lamb and poultry match the wine's intensity without overpowering it, while mushrooms and earthy notes play up to the wine's mineral character. Serve it at 16-17 degrees, so the elegance and the long finish are allowed to unfold.

About the wine

A small elevated terrace on Contrada Arcuria has produced a very special wine every year.

The wine has been light like a Barolo Monprivato, but also had elegance as such.

Alberto has every year mixed the juice in his regular Arcuria, but in 2015, for the first time ever, he has vinified the juice entirely himself.

The result is Arcuria Sopra il Pozzo, loosely translated OVER THE WELL, alluding to the river that flows beneath this terrace.

2000 bottles have been made. The wine is fantastically elegant, and it resembles great classic Barolo as much as great Pinot Noir.

It is young, but just super delicious.

The wine is fermented on cement, then 2 years in a Stockinger cask.

The wine is organic like everything else from Graci.

This is a new wine from Alberto Graci with fruit sourced from the part of his vineyard holding located "above the well" in the Contrada Arcuria not too far from the Graci winery. The beautiful 2015 Etna Rosso Arcurìa Sopra il Pozzo pours from the bottle with medium intensity and mild ruby intensity. You might mistake this wine for a Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo if you were to judge by appearance alone. However, the bouquet shows that strong volcanic character that is unmistakable in the red wines from Etna; wild berries, blue flowers, red currant, licorice, mountain herbs and crushed stone all play leading roles on the bouquet. That dry tannin that I got in the top-shelf Quota 1000 Barbabecchi is not present here.

Vin fra en helt særlig selektion, som Alberto Graci sourcer fra Acurìa-cruen på Etnas nordside, og det er decideret stor vin; aromaerne fine og flintede med bålrøg og aske, mint og urter. Frugten skinner med sine mange lag og glasklare aromaer af granatæble, rabarber og søde hindbær. Dertil velkalibreret fadkrydderi. En uhyre elegant og betagende vin med silkeblød struktur og balance, og så den arketypiske tørhed og det salte mineralske bid i finalen, som altid er at finde i seriøs Etna. Længden er imponerende, og tanninerne smeltende søde. Prisen er på vej op i stratosfæren, men også en stor vinøs oplevelse. 5/6 stjerner.
