Collection: Touriga Franca

Touriga Franca is a Portuguese grape variety, and with us you will find it exclusively from the grape's Portuguese homeland: Douro. This is where the grape has its natural base, and it is also from here that all our wines made from Touriga Franca come. Douro is an inland and deeply continental valley, marked by strong heat and dry conditions, and it is in this harsh, sunny climate that Touriga Franca thrives best. The coastal cultivation you sometimes hear about does not belong here.

Touriga Franca is known for featuring in two widely different styles. It plays an important role in Portugal's classic port wine, where it contributes structure and body. But it is at least as important in dry, red still wines, where it often forms part of the red cuvées from Douro together with other local grapes. It is therefore a misconception to think of Touriga Franca solely as a port grape. In the dry red wines it shows its versatility and helps give the wines their recognisable character.

In Portugal, Touriga Franca is also used outside Douro, among other places in Dão and other Portuguese areas, where it forms part of local red wines. At Copenhagen Wine, however, we carry it first and foremost by virtue of our Douro wines, where the grape comes into its own in the company of the valley's other classic varieties.

If you are curious about Portuguese red wine and would like to understand what makes Douro special, Touriga Franca is a good place to start. It gives you both the gateway to the dry, powerful red wines and a sense of the tradition behind port wine. If you want to explore the valley further, you can delve into our selection from Douro and experience how this grape contributes to the wines' expression.
