The Bright and More Mediterranean Side of Milo
100% Carricante from Contrada Praino in Milo on the eastern slope of Etna. From this vintage, Maugeri places even clearer focus on the differences between the individual contradas – and Praino shows a different side of Milo than the cool and tightly mineral Volpare.
The vineyards are located about 700 meters above sea level and face the Ionian Sea. Here, the vines stand on the characteristic terraces in volcanic soil, but in Praino, the soil is more sandy with a higher clay content. The combination of altitude, exposure to the sea, and the unique terroir gives Carricante a more open and aromatic expression, while maintaining the fresh acidity and salty minerality that characterize Milo.
The aroma is elegant and nuanced with citrus, white flowers, ripe yellow fruit, and Mediterranean herbs. The taste has more breadth and fullness than Volpare with a beautiful creamy texture around the fresh acidity. The fruit is generous without being heavy, and beneath it lies the volcanic minerality and a distinct salty character that gives the wine energy and a long, persistent finish.
The grapes are harvested manually and gently pressed after a short cryomaceration. The must is clarified at a low temperature before fermentation and subsequent aging on the fine lees. The combination of stainless steel tank and a small portion of French oak provides texture and depth without overpowering the fresh and mineral character of Carricante.
Praino is the more open and generous of Maugeri's two Etna Bianco Superiore from Milo. Still with Carricante's vibrant acidity and Etna's saltiness, but with more fruit, fullness, and a distinct Mediterranean touch.
