Structured and classic Brunello with cool depth and great aging potential
Brunello di Montalcino 2021 from Mastrojanni is a serious and precise interpretation of Sangiovese, where structure, freshness, and depth are in perfect balance. It is a vintage that appeals to the patient wine lover but already shows classic Brunello character with great clarity and elegance.
The aroma presents the wine as sleek and nuanced with clear notes of cherries and dark berries, accompanied by dried rose petals, Mediterranean herbs, and a darker expression of tobacco, forest floor, and discreet spices from the barrel aging. The expression is cool and focused, without overripeness.
The taste is structured and deep with firm, finely polished tannins and a lively, precise acidity. The fruit is concentrated but tightly held in check by the wine's natural freshness and mineral nerve. The aftertaste is long, dry, and elegant with a clear sense of origin.
This is a Brunello that needs a little air in the glass—and even more time in the cellar—but already rewards the curious taster.
The 2021 vintage was demanding but produced high-quality grapes. The winter was unusually cold with several days below freezing, which gave the vines a deep rest. An early bud burst was halted by night frost in April, reducing yield but increasing concentration in the remaining grapes. The summer was marked by pronounced drought, though without extreme heat waves, ensuring slow and balanced ripening with beautiful phenolic components and a clear aging potential.
The grapes come from vineyards at altitudes between 180-420 meters with exposure to the south, southeast, and southwest. The soil consists of clay, sandstone, and old lacustrine deposits, which contribute to the wine's structure, complexity, and fine minerality.
The harvest was conducted manually starting on September 11. After gentle pressing, the must undergoes fermentation and maceration on the skins for at least 25 days in concrete. The wine is then aged for a full 36 months in large oak barrels (16–54 hl), followed by a minimum of six months of bottle aging.
Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is the ruby in Mastrojanni's portfolio and an ideal choice for those seeking a classic, structured Brunello with both depth, elegance, and a long life ahead.
