This single-vineyard Brunello is a powerful affair with firm tannin, high acidity and a generous, long finish after many years of barrel ageing. It wants food of corresponding weight and richness, so the tannins get animal protein to grip onto and soften in the encounter, while the acidity cuts through the fat. Choose tender, slow-cooked meat and mature, firm cheeses, and keep spice and chilli down, since the wine's structure can otherwise seem harsh. If you serve it a touch warmer, the elegance emerges more clearly than the rough first meeting suggests.

Vigna Schiena d'Asino is Mastrojanni's top wine. Magnum bottle.
Schiena d'Asino has a characteristic dense, clear red color.
The nose presents tones of red fruits and balsamic.
The taste starts strong and almost harsh, finishing with a generous, elegant long aftertaste. It can be enjoyed with robust dishes but is excellent on its own.
A wine to be enjoyed in good company.
It is a single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino, aged for a full 42 months in Allier oak barrels and then 12 months in bottles in Mastrojanni's cellar.

The Wine Advocate
This is Mastrojanni's top-shelf wine with the black wax seal affixed to the front of the bottle. The 2019 vintage delivers robust aromas with black and purple fruits. You also get spice and char from longer cellar aging. It closes with gritty flavors of espresso or Turkish coffee over a generous, full-bodied mouthfeel.

Entrancing notes of plush blueberry, black cherry and cassis glide across the charred oak backbone and congregate over the firm, fine structure. Beautifully tiered tannins and visceral acidity meld into the embracing white pepper finish.

Bright fruit on the nose, showing raspberries, fresh peach peel and citrus notes such as orange zest along with violets and earthy minerality. Full-bodied, this has mouth-coating, superflavored concentration, crisp acidity and velvety tannins soaked in oranges.
