This powerful blend of sagrantino, montepulciano and sangiovese has a structured yet velvety tannin and a full-bodied frame that calls for food of equal weight, with ample protein and richness. The tannins are softened by the fat in braised and grilled meat dishes, and the wine's notes of ripe plums, licorice and mellow spices suit both game and well-hung meat. If you have charcuterie on the table, a few pickled vegetables lend a fresh contrast between the rich mouthfuls. With aged cheeses the wine's structure meets the cheese's fat and salt, so both come across as more rounded.

About the wine

Prova d’Autore – A powerful and harmonious red wine from Umbria

The wine presents a beautiful garnet red color with ruby reflections. The aroma is complex with notes of ripe plums, red berries, sweet spices, tobacco, and licorice. The taste is structured and powerful with a soft, velvety texture and a persistent harmonious aftertaste.

An exquisite blend of 30% sagrantino, 30% montepulciano, and 40% sangiovese with large grapes, all sustainably grown on calcareous and clay-rich soil in Todi.

The vineyards, planted in 1999, are northeast-facing, and the low yield of only 1 kg of grapes per vine ensures an intense and concentrated wine.

The grapes are harvested and vinified separately depending on their optimal ripeness. After destemming and pressing, they undergo a long skin maceration of 22-24 days, followed by fermentation with natural yeast in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine is aged for 24 months in neutral Slavonian oak barrels and French barriques, before being blended and bottle-aged for at least six months to achieve balance and depth.

Prova d’Autore is a wine with great character and complexity, making it the perfect choice for hearty dishes like braised lamb, game, or aged cheeses.
