Cantina Roccafiore

Umbria – terroir-driven wines from the hills of Todi

Umbria is often called Italy's green heart. The region has no coastline and no large wine volumes, but precisely because of this, it has maintained a strong identity with a focus on local grape varieties and wines with a clear origin. Around the historic town of Todi, one finds a climate and soil particularly suited for elegant and characterful wines - especially from grechetto and sangiovese.

Cantina Roccafiore is one of the producers that most clearly shows how tradition and modern winemaking can be combined in Umbria.

Establishment and vision

Cantina Roccafiore was founded in the late 1990s by the Baccarelli family on the hills outside Todi. From the beginning, the ambition was clear: to create wines that respect the area's history and grape varieties, but with a contemporary expression and great technical precision.

Local varieties such as grechetto and sangiovese were planted, supplemented by smaller parcels with moscato giallo, sagrantino, and montepulciano. The first vintage was released in 2005, and since then, Roccafiore has built a solid reputation for wines with balance, clarity, and a clear terroir connection.

Vineyards, altitude, and soil

The winery's vineyards today cover about 15 hectares and are located in the soft, rolling hills around Todi. The vineyards primarily have a southeast exposure and are situated at altitudes between 300 and 380 meters above sea level.

The area benefits from a stable microclimate with cool, fresh winds from Monte Martano, which help preserve the grapes' acidity and aromatic freshness. The soil consists of white clay and calcareous marl, which gives the wines structure, finesse, and a characteristic minerality.

Sustainability as practice

Sustainability has been an integral part of Cantina Roccafiore's work from the beginning. They cultivate with minimal intervention in the vineyard, and in daily operations, both solar energy and collected rainwater are used. Additionally, lightweight bottles are used to reduce the CO₂ footprint during transport.

For Roccafiore, sustainability is not a marketing ploy but a practical and long-term approach to caring for both the land, plants, and surroundings.

Vinification and style

Production is now led by Luca Baccarelli, who works purposefully to create wines with a clear identity and a distinct origin. The focus is on the natural expression of the grapes and letting the soil, altitude, and climate speak through the wines.

The result is wines that appear both modern and authentic - precise, balanced, and with an unmistakable sense of Umbria in the glass.
