Grenache is a dark grape that originally comes from Spain, where it is known as Garnacha, but which has truly found its home in southern France. It is precisely from here that we at Copenhagen Wine source our Grenache, led by wines from the Rhône. The area gives the grape the warmth and fullness that make it one of the most characterful in Southern Europe.
In the glass, Grenache typically shows itself as a full-bodied red wine with a rich, warm character, high alcohol and moderate to low acidity. It is a grape that thrives in sun and heat, and which therefore naturally develops a generous, soft style. You will often find it as a supporting part of a blend, where it provides body and fruit, while other grapes contribute structure and acidity. It is this role that makes Grenache so central to many of southern France's classic wines.
The best-known expression is without doubt Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where Grenache often forms the backbone of the powerful red wines. The grape also plays the lead role in the rosé wines from Tavel, which reveal an entirely different, lighter side of its potential. In addition, Grenache is used for port-like wines in certain areas, where its high alcohol and concentration come into their own.
Beyond southern France and its Spanish origins, Grenache is also grown in Rioja, in California, in South Africa and in the Balkans, which testifies to the grape's ability to thrive in various warm climates. You will also encounter it under a long list of synonyms, including Garnacha in Spain and Alicante, the latter however with a certain risk of confusion with Alicante Bouschet.
If you are fond of red wines with warmth, round fruit and a soft texture, Grenache is a good place to start. Our selection from the Rhône gives you a fine introduction to the grape's southern French expression, where provenance and craftsmanship are allowed to speak.
