Collection: Grero

Grero is a grape variety that few people will come across in everyday life, and one that is worth approaching with an open mind. Unlike many other grapes, Grero is only sparsely described in the major ampelographic reference works. No clear geographical origin or primary growing area has been established in the recognised wine literature, and the grape appears neither in the large international grape registries nor in the leading ampelographic databases.

This also means that here we stick to what is actually documented, rather than making things up. There is only limited knowledge of the grape's ampelographic characteristics, its ripening pattern and its resistance to disease. Likewise, no confirmed DNA parentage or genetic studies of Grero have been published in peer-reviewed sources. When a grape is so thinly illuminated, curiosity is precisely the best companion.

At Copenhagen Wine we carry Grero from Italy, and specifically our bottle comes from Umbria. This should be understood as the provenance of the wine we have in our range, and not as the origin of the grape, for as mentioned that cannot be determined. Umbria is a green, hilly region in the heart of Italy with a long wine tradition, and it is from this background that the individual wine has grown.

Because the technical documentation is so limited, we will not promise you particular aromas or a fixed style in advance. Our recommendation is to let the wine speak for itself and taste it without too many expectations. For the wine-curious, Grero is an obvious occasion to step a little outside the familiar grapes and experience something that is not found on every other shelf. If you want to know more about this particular wine, you will find the details on the product itself above.
