Musigny Grand Cru is one of the most prestigious appellations in Bourgogne, located in the commune of Chambolle-Musigny in Côte de Nuits. The vineyard is relatively small, around 10.3 hectares, and the limited area is a big part of the reason why these wines are so sought after. This is about provenance in its purest form: a named piece of land where terroir is allowed to step clearly forward in the glass.
Most people associate Musigny with red wine, and for good reason. The red wines are based on Pinot Noir and make up over 90% of production. In addition to the reds, a rare white wine is also made from Chardonnay, known as Musigny Blanc. This makes Musigny the only Grand Cru in Côte de Nuits that contains both red and white wine, and one of just two Grand Cru in all of Bourgogne with both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (the other being Corton). In Chambolle-Musigny, Musigny is moreover one of only two Grand Cru, together with Bonnes-Mares.
If you are new to the world of Bourgogne, it is worth knowing that Grand Cru is the top classification level in the region. Musigny was established as Grand Cru in 1936 and is often mentioned among the most classic vineyards in Côte de Nuits. The style is typically refined and deep rather than loud, and it is precisely the nuances that make the wines interesting to follow over time.
Ageing potential is a central part of Musigny's character. This means that a bottle from here can both be enjoyed in its youth and kept in the cellar, if you have the patience for it.
