Collection: Nebbiolo d'Alba

Nebbiolo d'Alba is a DOC for red wine from the hills around the town of Alba in Piemonte in north-western Italy. The zone spreads out on both sides of the Tanaro river, with its weight in the Roero hills to the north, and extends through municipalities such as Alba, Canale, Castellinaldo, Corneliano, Diano d'Alba, Vezza and Grinzane Cavour in the province of Cuneo. Together this makes up around 536 hectares, and the wine is made exclusively from Nebbiolo, the grape that also lies behind its famous neighbours Barolo and Barbaresco. By far the most is produced as still red wine.

What makes it special lies in the soil. Here the subsoil is sandier than in Barolo and Barbaresco, and this gives wines that are softer, a little less intense and more approachable at a young age. Where the two great neighbouring appellations require two and three years of ageing respectively, the still red Nebbiolo d'Alba need only mature for one year before it may be sold. That makes it a good and affordable entry into Nebbiolo's universe, without you having to wait for years.

The style nonetheless clearly betrays the kinship. You find Nebbiolo's firm tannins and the characteristic aroma of tar and roses, and although the wine can be drunk young with pleasure, it also has good ageing potential. It is a wine that can both be enjoyed now and set aside for a couple of years.

At Copenhagen Wine, all our Nebbiolo d'Alba comes from precisely this delimited appellation in and around Alba, where the grape's origin is fixed in law. We work with a well-chosen selection and stick to the zone's municipalities. If you are looking for an Italian red wine with structure and elegance, but a slightly more welcoming demeanour than the heavy Barolos, Nebbiolo d'Alba is an obvious place to begin. If you want to explore further, you will find more options in our selection from Piemonte.
