Collection: Sicilia Rosso IGT

Sicilia Rosso IGT is a broad classification for red wines from Sicilia, covering the entire island in sunny southern Italy. The designation belongs to the flexible IGT level, which sits below DOC and DOCG, and it gives producers the freedom to work across the narrower appellation rules. At Copenhagen Wine we stock Sicilian red wine from precisely this category, and this is where you find the wine's Italian roots firmly anchored in the island's warm climate and long winemaking tradition.

Today the designation Terre Siciliane is used as the consistent, flexible classification across the whole island. It was created in 2011 as a replacement for the earlier Sicilia IGT, when Sicilia DOC was introduced above it. A very broad range of grapes is permitted, both native varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Catarratto, Grillo and Inzolia and international ones such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Since 2017, however, new wines made from Grillo and Nero d'Avola must be classified as Sicilia DOC, but many existing wines still carry the IGT designation.

The great freedom in the grape material is precisely the point of an IGT like this. It makes room for both traditional Sicilian varieties and more international expressions, and it lets producers shape a red wine with character that reflects the island's warmth and its down-to-earth craftsmanship. For you as a wine-curious customer, this means you can explore an expression of Italy that holds both the sunny and the concentrated, without having to navigate a thicket of narrow rules.

If you are particularly interested in the native grapes, you can also take a closer look at Nerello Mascalese, one of the island's most characterful varieties.
