Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG belongs in the southern part of Toscana, around the hilly mountain town of Montepulciano. The town sits like a small island in the middle of a rolling landscape of wheat fields and pastures, and this is where the tradition for the area's proud red wines originates. Vino Nobile also holds a special place in Italian wine history as the country's very first DOCG.
The defining grape variety is Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile. Together with Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, it is one of the three great Tuscan expressions of Sangiovese, and each of these areas gives its own interpretation of the grape. From Montepulciano you get powerful red wines with pronounced structure and good ageing potential, where you often encounter aromas and flavours of black cherry along with the forest-floor and smoky nuances that are characteristic of Sangiovese. It is all rounded off by the Tuscan terroir.
If you are fond of wines with backbone and finesse, and which handle both a few years in the cellar and a hearty meal on the table, Vino Nobile is a natural place to look. It shares its starting point with the other great Tuscans, but stands on its own feet with its own tone.
At Copenhagen Wine we carry Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from its homeland in Toscana, where the grape and the classification belong. This is where you find the wine in its purest form, and this is where our selection comes from. If you want to explore the breadth of the region, you can delve further into our other wines from Toscana and from Italy in general.
