Terre Siciliane IGT is a broad regional designation covering all of Sicily in Southern Italy. It was created in 2011 as a successor to the earlier Sicilia IGT, when Sicilia DOC was introduced above it. As an IGT, it sits at the freer level below DOC and DOCG, which gives growers room to work freely with both the island's own and international grapes.
It is precisely this breadth that characterises the designation. You will find red wine, white wine and rosato, and the list of permitted grapes is long. Among the native varieties you will encounter Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Catarratto, Grillo and Inzolia, while the international ones include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. That flexibility is part of the designation's charm: it captures Sicily in its full range, from the local, sun-ripened grapes to the international classics, often with a clear sense of place.
A small technical detail is worth knowing. Since 2017, new wines made from Grillo and Nero d'Avola must be classified as Sicilia DOC, but many existing wines still carry the IGT designation. Terre Siciliane therefore still functions as the broad, flexible umbrella across the whole island, and it is often here that you will find wines with personality and a good balance between origin and expression.
At Copenhagen Wine we place emphasis on origin and direct connections to the producers, and you can sense that in the Sicilian wines we carry. If you are looking for a wine with southern warmth, Terre Siciliane IGT is a good place to begin. If you want to explore the island's grapes more closely, you can delve into our selection of Nerello Mascalese or the fresh, fragrant Catarratto.
