Collection: Treixadura

Treixadura is a white grape variety with roots in Galicia in northwestern Spain, and this is precisely where we find the wines in our selection. With us, Treixadura comes from Ribeira Sacra, one of Galicia's most characterful wine regions, where the grape typically appears in white blends rather than standing alone. It is a variety that is gradually gaining international attention, and one that tells a story of local wine tradition and revival.

Treixadura originally hails from Ribeiro, where it is considered a local variety planted to replace the varieties people resorted to after phylloxera. Today it is a revitalised part of the region's traditional white blends. You will also find it as a permitted variety in Rías Baixas, where it often appears alongside Albariño and Loureiro and can make up around 10 percent of certain traditional blends. In the Condado de Tea sub-zone it appears together with Albariño, and a few producers even make pure Treixadura wines in the zones where blends are otherwise the norm.

The variety is also grown in Monterrei (where it is called Verdello Louro), in Valdeorras and in Ribeira Sacra, just as it features in white wines under the designations Barbanza e Iria IGP and Valle del Miño-Ourense IGP. In Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra you will encounter it especially as part of blends, where it contributes to the whole rather than taking centre stage. In Ribeiro, Treixadura is also permitted in the sweet Tostado, where the grapes are dried naturally before being pressed.

As a grape, Treixadura is characterised by its elliptical berries, and it is sensitive to botrytis, which places demands on both vineyard and vintage. It appears both in traditional field blends and in single-variety wines, and this gives a broad range of expression depending on where and how it is vinified.
