Collection: Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island lies off Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf and is one of New Zealand's most prestigious wine islands. A warm, relatively dry microclimate and the constant sea breeze provide good conditions for grapes with concentration and finesse, and the island's soils of clay and clay-mixed loam help shape the character of the wines.

Waiheke Island is first and foremost known for its red Bordeaux-inspired blends based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is these structured, age-worthy red wines that have created the island's reputation. At the same time, fine Chardonnay is also grown, and Syrah is part of the picture, even though it is not the island's hallmark above all else. Together this paints a region where maritime climate and warmth give wines with both power and elegance.

At Copenhagen Wine, the majority of our Waiheke wines naturally come from precisely this island, which ranks among New Zealand's most interesting terroirs. If you want to explore the country more broadly, you'll find more options under New Zealand, and if you're curious about the grape, you can dive into our selection of Syrah.

Waiheke Island is a good place to start if you want to experience New Zealand from a slightly different angle than the classic, fresh white wines from the mainland. Here it's about depth, structure and wines that can both be enjoyed now and kept a few years in the cellar.
