This sangiovese is lively and medium-bodied with fresh wild cherries, pomegranate, soft tannins and a chalky, mineral bite. The high acidity and the soft tannins mean you'll do well to pair it with dishes that have a little fattiness, which the tannins can cut through, while the acidity keeps the mouth fresh. The mineral and slightly smoky character suits grilled and lightly spiced meat, but the wine's slender style never dominates, so it also goes nicely with mushrooms, herbs and tomato-based dishes. Serve it lightly chilled with light and medium-bodied meat rather than the very heaviest braises.

About the wine

The top wine from Bakkanali – A single-vineyard Sangiovese with high energy and terroir character.

Sangiovese from a small single vineyard right in front of the cellar at Poggioferro on Monte Amiata at an altitude of 600 meters, which was planted, cared for, and maintained by the previous owner, Fiorenzo.

A lively and characterful wine with notes of wild cherries, pomegranate, dried flowers, and a chalky, mineral grip.

Enjoy it slightly chilled – either now or over the next 5-7 years.

The vineyard is only 0.6 hectares and sits on iron-rich marl with chalk and carbonate – a terroir that imparts structure, acidity, and character. The vines are 20 years old and are organically farmed according to biodynamic principles.

Fermentation takes place with whole clusters and natural yeast in a semi-carbonic style over two weeks, followed by manual pressing and a few days of infusion before aging in wooden barrels.

Only 4,000 bottles produced.
