Collection: Rosso di Toscana IGT

Toscana IGT is the broad, flexible designation that covers all of Toscana in central Italy. It was introduced in 1992 as a tier between Vino da Tavola and DOC/DOCG, and it arose largely to give the wines we know today as Super Tuscans a quality classification outside the strict rules. The result is a designation that grants the producer wide freedom in both grape selection and style, as long as at least 85% of the grapes come from Toscana.

That very freedom is the key to understanding what you find here. Whereas Toscana's DOC and DOCG wines are often tied to particular grapes and methods, a Rosso di Toscana IGT can be built however the winemaker wishes. Sangiovese is the most widely planted grape variety in Toscana and forms the backbone of many of the wines, but the rules also open the door to international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah alongside the native grapes. If a wine is labelled with a single grape variety, it must contain at least 85% of that very variety.

This gives a broad range of red styles under the same designation. You encounter wines that lean toward the classic, fresh Toscana character with Sangiovese at the centre, and you encounter fuller interpretations where the international grapes play a larger role. What they share is their roots in Toscana and a certain artistic freedom on the part of the one who made the wine.

As a regional designation, Toscana IGT also encompasses more than just red wine. The rules permit white wine, rosato and even mousserende vin as well, but it is the reds you find gathered here. If you want to explore the area further, you can dive into our selection from Toscana or take a broader look at Italien. A Rosso di Toscana IGT is a good place to start if you want to experience Tuscan red wine with room for the individual producer's signature.
