Redigaffi 2018 is an elegant and coolly classic Merlot with medium body, ripe but soft tannins and plenty of dark fruits with a hint of chocolate. The ripe, velvety tannins need animal fat to wrap themselves around, so choose dishes with juicy, tender meat rather than the very heaviest and most powerful ones. The balanced acidity and generous fruit also suit charcuterie and aged cheeses, where a little tangy contrast from pickles or mustard keeps the palate fresh. Serve the wine at 17-18 degrees so the tannins feel as soft as possible.

About the wine

Tua Rita's truly great wine.

The wine planted in 1988 on the chalky fields around the winery.

In 1994, they decided at Tua Rita to take two barriques of cask merlot and vinify these alone rather than as usual blending it with cabernet for Giusto di Notri. The wine was named after a stream that runs very close to the vineyard. This was the beginning of the cult wine, Redigaffi, which later for vintage 2000 achieved 100 points with Robert Parker.

After harvest, the wine has been aged for 18-20 months in new French barriques.

Redigaffi is a fantastic Merlot with great balance and elegance. The wine just has so many layers of dark fruits and there are also notes of chocolate.

A master wine that impresses year after year.

2018 is a very cool and classic Tuscan vintage and the wines are very elegant. Not as powerful as the 2017, but you can drink the 2017 while waiting for the 2018 to be ready.

Lots of chocolate and berries, as well as spice, walnuts and vanilla. Its full and layered. Extremely long and flavorful. So juicy and sexy. Luscious is the word.

This Redigaffi reflects beautifully the 2018 vintage with its cool spring, mild summer and slower, well-balanced, late ripening season. It's a lithe and lively wine, perhaps less concentrated than some other vintages but very bright, vivid and accessible.

I tasted this wine a few months ago before it was bottled. Coming back to the 2018 Redigaffi now cements the very favorable impression made by this current release. Old-vine Merlot imparts rich and thick density with a beautiful bouquet of dark fruit, black cherry, cedar, spice and light mahogany smoke. What I notice most about the wine now is the delicate balance of the mouthfeel. You get ample power here. Redigaffi is always distinguished by its compelling intensity, but the wine remains elegant and lithe nonetheless. I would expect it to evolve beautifully with many soft and shifting incarnations along the way.
